SPF explained, which sunscreen is right for your skin

SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor and is a measure of how well a sunscreen protects your skin against UVB radiation. But which SPF do you need, and which formula suits your skin type? In this article, Yvonne van Veen explains it clearly.

What exactly does SPF mean?

SPF indicates how much longer you can stay in the sun without getting burned compared to unprotected skin. SPF 30 filters approximately 97% of UVB radiation, while SPF 50 filters about 98%. The difference may sound small, but for sensitive or fair skin, it makes a big difference, especially with prolonged exposure.

"I always advise my clients to use at least SPF 30, preferably SPF 50. Not only in the summer but all year round. UV radiation is also present in winter and is the biggest cause of skin aging."

Yvonne van Veen, medical beautician

Mineral or chemical sunscreen?

There are two types of sunscreens: mineral and chemical. Mineral filters, such as zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, sit on the skin and reflect UV radiation. They are effective immediately after application and are suitable for sensitive skin. Chemical filters are absorbed into the skin and convert UV radiation into heat. They often have a lighter texture but can cause irritation in sensitive skin.

Which sunscreen suits your skin type?

Dry or sensitive skin

Choose a mineral SPF with moisturizing ingredients. The IK SKIN Perfection - SUN BALANCE FACE SPF 50 is specially developed for facial skin and combines high protection with a nourishing effect. Ideal for daily use.

Normal to combination skin

The Bask Suncare - Mineral Sunscreen Serum is a light, serum-like mineral SPF that fits perfectly into a daily routine. It absorbs quickly, leaves no white cast, and works excellently as a base under makeup.

Body and active use

For the body or for outdoor activities, the Bask - SPF 50 Lotion is an excellent choice. Combine it with the Amici® Refillable Brush for quick and even application, even on the back or shoulders. The refillable brush is reusable and perfect for on the go.

Tips for proper SPF use

  • Apply SPF as the last step of your morning routine, after your serum and cream
  • Use enough product; half a teaspoon is the guideline for the face
  • Reapply every two hours during prolonged outdoor exposure
  • Use SPF even on cloudy days and in winter
